Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a compassionate and dedicated Settlement Worker to join our dynamic Newcomer Services team in Richmond, British Columbia. This vital role is at the forefront of supporting immigrants and refugees as they embark on their journey of integration into Canadian society. You will be instrumental in empowering newcomers by providing comprehensive settlement assistance, fostering self-sufficiency, and promoting their successful adaptation to life in Canada.

As a Settlement Worker, you will conduct thorough needs assessments, helping clients identify their immediate and long-term priorities. Based on these assessments, you will develop personalized settlement plans, guiding individuals and families through crucial aspects such as navigating the Canadian healthcare system, understanding educational opportunities, accessing language training, finding suitable housing, and exploring employment pathways. Your expertise will extend to providing information on Canadian laws, rights, and responsibilities, ensuring newcomers are well-informed and confident in their new environment.

A significant part of this role involves connecting clients with appropriate community resources and mainstream services, acting as a crucial link to local support networks. You will facilitate access to various programs, advocate on behalf of clients when necessary, and provide orientation sessions to help demystify the complexities of Canadian systems. This position requires a proactive approach, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments for new immigrants and refugees.
  • Develop and implement individualized settlement plans tailored to client needs.
  • Provide information and guidance on Canadian systems, including healthcare, education, housing, employment, and legal rights.
  • Connect clients with relevant community resources, social services, and mainstream programs.
  • Facilitate workshops, information sessions, and orientation programs for newcomers.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure equitable access to services.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records and case notes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external community organizations to enhance service delivery.
  • Monitor client progress and provide ongoing support and follow-up.
  • Participate in outreach activities to engage with newcomer communities.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in English (verbal and written)
  • Strong understanding of Canadian settlement issues and resources in British Columbia
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Proven experience in case management and client advocacy
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including individuals from various cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and client management software
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Education, or a related field.
  • Fluency in additional languages commonly spoken by newcomers in Richmond (e.g., Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Farsi, Tagalog).
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in settlement services or a related social services role.
  • Knowledge of local Richmond community resources and networks.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
