Job Description

A Botanist – Field Work at Hiring.zycto is a critical role for our environmental assessment and conservation initiatives. We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Botanist with a passion for fieldwork and a deep understanding of plant identification, ecology, and habitat assessment. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive botanical field surveys and assessments, including rare plant surveys, wetland delineations, and invasive species mapping.
  • Accurately identify plant species to the species level, utilizing dichotomous keys, regional floras, and other identification resources.
  • Collect and manage botanical data using GPS, GIS, and other digital tools, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, technical reports, and proposals summarizing survey findings, ecological conditions, and recommendations.
  • Assess habitat quality and ecological integrity, identifying potential impacts and contributing to mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Contribute to the development of environmental impact assessments, permitting applications, and restoration plans.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols, especially when working in remote or challenging field conditions.
  • Stay current with botanical nomenclature, ecological principles, and relevant environmental legislation.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in plant identification across various taxa, particularly flora native to Ontario and surrounding regions.
  • Strong understanding of ecological principles, plant communities, and wetland ecology.
  • Proficiency with GPS devices, GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS), and data collection applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments, often in remote locations.
  • Physical fitness and ability to navigate rough terrain, adverse weather, and carry field equipment.
  • Valid G-class driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Botany, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Professional designation (e.g., P.Ag., Ecologist-in-Training) or working towards one.
  • Experience with advanced statistical analysis for ecological data.
  • Familiarity with remote sensing techniques for vegetation mapping.
  • Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., Endangered Species Act, Conservation Authorities Act, Fisheries Act).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
