In this fast-paced and rewarding role, you will be responsible for a wide array of critical tasks that keep an airport running efficiently. From the moment an aircraft arrives to its departure, you’ll be an integral part of the ground crew, working in a dynamic outdoor and indoor environment. You’ll work closely with airline personnel, security teams, and fellow ground staff to coordinate flight turnarounds, ensuring safety, punctuality, and exceptional service standards are consistently met. This includes the careful and secure loading and unloading of passenger luggage, freight, and mail, operating various pieces of specialized airport equipment such as baggage tugs and belt loaders, and meticulously guiding aircraft on the tarmac with precision and adherence to strict protocols.
Beyond the physical demands of baggage handling, you’ll also be instrumental in the boarding process. This involves warmly greeting passengers, providing clear directions, verifying travel documents with accuracy, addressing inquiries with a helpful attitude, and ensuring a smooth and orderly transition onto the aircraft. Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently load and unload passenger luggage, cargo, and mail onto and from aircraft.
- Operate specialized ground support equipment (e.g., baggage tugs, belt loaders, pushback tractors) in a safe and responsible manner.
- Guide aircraft to and from parking stands using hand signals and communication systems.
- Assist passengers during the boarding and deplaning process, providing clear instructions and support.
- Verify passenger boarding passes and travel documents, ensuring compliance with airline and security regulations.
- Respond to passenger inquiries and provide excellent customer service, resolving issues promptly and courteously.
- Perform pre-departure checks and ensure all baggage and cargo are correctly secured and accounted for.
- Adhere strictly to all airport safety and security procedures, including those related to dangerous goods.
- Collaborate effectively with airline staff, flight crews, and other ground service teams to ensure on-time departures.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or incidents immediately to supervisors.
Required Skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure airport environment.
- Strong physical fitness, capable of lifting and moving heavy luggage (up to 32kg) and standing for extended periods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with passengers and team members.
- Attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety and security procedures.
- Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as airport operations are 24/7.
- Must hold a valid UK driving license (for operating ground equipment, or ability to obtain one).
- Right to work in the UK.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a physical, manual handling role or customer service position.
- Experience working in an airport or logistics environment.
- Knowledge of aviation safety and security regulations.
- Proficiency in additional languages (desirable for assisting diverse passengers).
- A Level or equivalent qualification.
