Job Description

The Animal Rescue Worker – Shelter role at Hiring.zycto is more than just a job; it’s a profound calling. Your daily tasks will range from routine animal care and maintaining meticulous shelter hygiene to assisting with veterinary procedures and engaging with the public. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, grooming, and administering prescribed medications as directed.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe shelter environment by regularly cleaning kennels, enclosures, and common areas.
  • Observe and monitor animal health, behavior, and temperament, promptly reporting any changes or concerns to veterinary staff.
  • Assist with animal intake, assessments, and processing, including vaccinations, microchipping, and initial health checks.
  • Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, including those who may be fearful, aggressive, or injured, following established protocols.
  • Facilitate animal enrichment activities and exercise to promote physical and mental well-being and reduce stress.
  • Assist with adoption counseling and meet-and-greets, helping prospective adopters find their perfect match and ensuring responsible placements.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date animal records, including medical histories, behavioral notes, and daily care logs.
  • Support veterinary technicians and veterinarians during medical examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the shelter's mission and services.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 1 year) in animal handling and care, preferably within a shelter, veterinary clinic, or rescue organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal behavior and common animal health issues.
  • Ability to safely and humanely handle animals of various species, sizes, and temperaments, including those with special needs.
  • Strong observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with empathy for both animals and people.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a dedicated team.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and basic computer skills for data entry.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Animal First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Animal Welfare, Veterinary Assistant, or a related animal care field.
  • Experience with specific animal rescue software or database systems for record management.
  • Familiarity with local animal welfare regulations and bylaws in British Columbia.
  • Experience in volunteer coordination or mentorship within an animal welfare setting.
