Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced Field Biologist to join our dynamic team in Toronto. This pivotal role involves extensive fieldwork, primarily focused on ecological assessments, species inventories, habitat monitoring, and environmental impact studies across various project sites in and around Southern Ontario. The successful candidate will be instrumental in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting biological data to inform critical environmental decisions and support sustainable development initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive biological field surveys, including flora and fauna inventories, habitat mapping, and species-at-risk assessments across varied terrains and conditions.
  • Operate and maintain specialized field equipment, such as GPS units, binoculars, cameras, and digital data collection tools.
  • Collect, record, and manage accurate biological data using standardized protocols and digital platforms, ensuring data integrity and quality.
  • Identify common and rare plant and animal species, including birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates, with a strong emphasis on regional expertise.
  • Perform environmental monitoring activities, including water quality sampling and soil analysis, as required by project scopes.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, data sheets, and photographic documentation for all survey activities, contributing to robust project records.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, environmental assessments, and permit applications, translating field findings into actionable insights.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental protocols and best practices in the field, prioritizing personal and team safety.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, senior biologists, and other team members to ensure seamless project execution and knowledge sharing.
  • Travel to various project sites, often in remote or rural locations, and work irregular hours as dictated by project needs, seasonal variations, and ecological timing.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of practical, hands-on field experience in biological surveys or ecological assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately identify a broad range of Ontario flora and fauna, including species-at-risk.
  • Proficiency with GPS technology, mobile data collection applications, and basic mapping concepts.
  • Strong observational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent data recording practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and team collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor conditions, including varying weather and terrain.
  • Valid G-class driver's license and a clean driving record, essential for site access.
  • Physical fitness to conduct extensive fieldwork, including hiking, carrying equipment, and navigating uneven terrain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant biological or ecological discipline.
  • Professional designation (e.g., P.Eng, P.Geo, R.P.Bio, or eligibility for same) within Ontario or Canada.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) for spatial analysis, mapping, and data visualization.
  • In-depth knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Endangered Species Act, Fisheries Act) relevant to Ontario.
  • Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, or other off-road vehicles in a professional context.
