Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Blaster – Mining to join our client’s dynamic team operating within the Canadian mining sector, with projects potentially located in the broader Ottawa region or requiring relocation to established mining sites. This is a critical role responsible for the safe and efficient execution of blasting operations in either open-pit or underground mining environments. As a Blaster, you will be instrumental in the primary extraction process, preparing blast sites, handling explosives, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and company safety standards.

Your expertise will directly contribute to the productivity and operational success of our client’s mining ventures. You will work closely with geology, engineering, and operations teams to understand blast designs, optimize fragmentation, and minimize ground vibration and flyrock. The ideal candidate possesses an unwavering commitment to safety, strong problem-solving abilities, and the technical proficiency to manage complex blasting scenarios. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute blasting operations safely and efficiently, adhering to all provincial and federal regulations, company policies, and best industry practices.
  • Interpret blast plans, layouts, and designs provided by engineers and geologists, ensuring accurate drilling and loading patterns.
  • Handle, transport, store, and dispose of explosives and blasting agents in accordance with strict safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct pre-blast inspections, including checking for misfires, ensuring proper ventilation, and confirming the evacuation of personnel from the blast zone.
  • Connect and initiate firing systems using appropriate detonation methods.
  • Perform post-blast evaluations, assessing fragmentation, mucking conditions, and identifying any potential issues or hazards.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all blasting activities, including explosive inventory, usage, and incident reports.
  • Operate and maintain blasting-related equipment, ensuring it is in safe working order.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other departments to coordinate activities and ensure seamless operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and report any unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or environmental concerns.

Required Skills

  • Valid Blaster's License (Provincial specific, e.g., Ontario Blaster's License).
  • Minimum 3 years of proven experience as a Blaster in a mining environment (open-pit or underground).
  • Thorough knowledge of blasting techniques, explosives, and detonation systems.
  • Excellent understanding of mining safety regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blast plans, and geological data.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties in demanding and varied environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate in Mining Technology or a related field.
  • Experience with various types of drilling equipment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience working in remote camp environments.
  • Knowledge of blasting software and optimization techniques.
