In this crucial role, you will be at the forefront of blood product management, ensuring the safety, efficacy, and compatibility of blood for transfusion. Your day-to-day will involve performing a comprehensive range of complex serological testing, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening and identification, and meticulous compatibility testing (crossmatching), all executed with unwavering accuracy and strict adherence to provincial and national regulatory guidelines. You will be responsible for the expert preparation, safe storage, and timely issuance of various blood components, including red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Maintaining meticulous records, conducting thorough quality control checks on reagents and sophisticated equipment, and actively participating in quality assurance programs will also be key facets of your contribution. The work you do is profoundly vital; it directly supports emergency transfusions, complex surgical procedures, oncology treatments, and ongoing patient care across a myriad of medical disciplines, often in critical situations.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform accurate ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, and crossmatching procedures.
- Identify and resolve complex antibody problems using various serological techniques.
- Prepare, store, and issue blood components according to established protocols and regulatory standards.
- Conduct daily quality control on reagents, equipment, and testing procedures.
- Maintain meticulous documentation and records of all blood bank activities, patient results, and inventory.
- Operate and troubleshoot automated and manual blood bank instrumentation.
- Adhere strictly to all internal policies, provincial (e.g., CCO) and national (e.g., CSA, AABB) regulatory requirements.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding blood product availability and compatibility issues.
- Participate in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure a safe working environment by following all safety protocols and handling biohazardous materials appropriately.
Required Skills
- Certified Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) by CSMLS or equivalent international certification recognized in Ontario.
- Minimum 2 years of recent, hands-on experience in a high-volume blood bank or transfusion service.
- Proficiency in performing complex serological tests and antibody identification.
- Thorough understanding of blood bank instrumentation and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Commitment to patient safety and quality assurance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced certification in Blood Bank (e.g., BB(ASCP), ART-BB).
- Experience with specific LIS platforms commonly used in Ontario hospitals.
- Participation in internal or external quality assurance programs.
- Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies in a laboratory setting.
- Experience providing training or mentorship to junior staff.
