Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement botanical research projects focusing on plant taxonomy, physiology, ecology, and conservation.
  • Conduct extensive field surveys for plant collection, identification, and ecological assessment.
  • Perform laboratory analyses, including molecular techniques, anatomical studies, and chemical assays.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze complex botanical data using statistical software and specialized databases.
  • Prepare detailed research reports, scientific publications, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Maintain accurate records of all research activities, samples, and data in accordance with established protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, sharing knowledge and contributing to team objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of grant proposals and secure funding for future research initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and ethical guidelines in field and laboratory work.
  • Mentor junior researchers or interns as required, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Botany, Plant Science, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in botanical research (field and/or lab).
  • Proficiency in plant identification, taxonomy, and ecological survey methods.
  • Strong understanding of research methodologies and experimental design.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific reporting and presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Proficiency in using botanical keys, herbaria, and other identification resources.
  • Valid driver's license for field work travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Botany, Plant Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis of plant data.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology techniques applicable to plant genetics.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in botanical or ecological journals.
  • Experience in grant writing and project management.
  • Knowledge of Canadian flora and ecosystems, particularly those in Ontario.
