Job Description

As a Bus Conductor, you will spend your days interacting with a diverse range of people, from daily commuters to tourists exploring the city. You’ll play a crucial role in maintaining schedule adherence, helping passengers board and alight safely, and providing assistance to those who need it most, including individuals with accessibility requirements. Your ability to handle cash and payment systems accurately, while maintaining a calm and helpful demeanor under all circumstances, will be key. This is a dynamic, on-the-go role that requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to serve the public. Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately collect fares, issue tickets, and validate passes using onboard systems.
  • Provide excellent customer service, assisting passengers with journey information, directions, and general inquiries.
  • Ensure passenger safety during boarding, alighting, and throughout the journey.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of routes, stops, and schedules to assist both passengers and drivers.
  • Handle cash and card payments responsibly and reconcile takings at the end of shifts.
  • Communicate effectively with the bus driver and operations control regarding service updates, delays, or incidents.
  • Assist passengers with special needs, including wheelchair users, parents with prams, and the elderly.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy working environment within the bus.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, or suspicious activity promptly to supervisors.

Required Skills

  • Proven customer service experience, ideally in a public-facing role.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle cash and operate payment systems accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A friendly, approachable, and professional demeanor.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in the transportation or hospitality industry.
  • Familiarity with Edinburgh and its public transport routes.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus.
