Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, servicing, and inspections on a fleet of buses, adhering to strict schedules and company standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults using advanced diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.
  • Execute comprehensive repairs on engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, suspension, and other critical components.
  • Conduct thorough safety checks and pre-MOT inspections, ensuring all vehicles comply with VOSA (DVSA) regulations and company safety protocols.
  • Complete all necessary documentation accurately and on time, including job cards, service sheets, and vehicle defect reports.
  • Respond to breakdown call-outs and carry out roadside repairs when required, ensuring minimal disruption to service.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, adhering to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Identify and report any recurring faults or potential improvements to fleet performance and efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider maintenance team and operations staff to ensure fleet availability and reliability.

Required Skills

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, PCV/HGV Repair, or a related automotive discipline.
  • Proven experience of at least 3 years as a Bus Mechanic, PCV Technician, or HGV Mechanic, specifically working with large commercial vehicles.
  • Strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency in using various diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Sound understanding of VOSA (DVSA) regulations and vehicle roadworthiness standards.
  • Full UK driving licence (Category B).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to health and safety procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PCV (Category D) driving licence.
  • Experience with specific bus manufacturers (e.g., Alexander Dennis, Wrightbus, Volvo, Scania).
  • Familiarity with telematics and modern fleet management systems.
  • Additional certifications in specialist areas such as air conditioning, hybrid/electric vehicle systems, or welding.
  • Prior experience in a busy fleet workshop environment.
