Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a talented and experienced Camera Operator to join our dynamic production team in Cults, Aberdeen. This pivotal role requires a versatile professional capable of excelling in both controlled studio environments and demanding on-location field shoots. You will be instrumental in capturing high-quality footage for a diverse range of projects, including broadcast television, corporate videos, live streams, and digital content. We are looking for an individual with a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of visual storytelling, and a passion for bringing creative visions to life through exceptional camerawork.

As a Camera Operator, you will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining various camera equipment, ensuring optimal image quality, and contributing significantly to the overall aesthetic and technical success of our productions. You’ll collaborate closely with directors, producers, lighting technicians, and sound engineers to achieve desired visual outcomes, often working under tight deadlines and in varying conditions. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and contribute to engaging content that resonates with audiences, shaping the visual narrative across multiple platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate professional video cameras (e.g., ENG, EFP, cinema cameras) in both studio and field settings to capture high-quality footage for diverse projects.
  • Set up and dismantle all camera-related equipment, including tripods, jibs, dollies, sliders, gimbals, and other stabilization tools.
  • Execute creative camera movements, shot compositions, and framing to meticulously fulfill directorial vision and enhance visual storytelling.
  • Adjust camera settings such as iris, focus, white balance, ISO, and shutter speed for optimal image quality under various lighting conditions.
  • Collaborate effectively with lighting and sound teams to ensure technical specifications are met and synchronized seamlessly.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting of camera equipment to ensure proper functionality and identify potential issues proactively.
  • Transport and manage camera gear safely and efficiently to and from various production locations, often working irregular hours.
  • Adhere strictly to production schedules, safety protocols, and company policies at all times, including those for working on location.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment for all camera-related equipment and accessories.
  • Participate actively in pre-production planning and post-production feedback sessions as required, offering insights from a camera perspective.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years (36 months) of proven experience operating professional broadcast and cinema cameras (e.g., Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, ARRI).
  • Strong understanding of camera mechanics, various lens types, filters, and essential accessories.
  • Expertise in shot composition, framing, and dynamic camera movement techniques to convey narrative effectively.
  • Ability to work both independently and as an integral part of a collaborative production team under pressure.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and strong technical aptitude for equipment setup and troubleshooting.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to take direction precisely and communicate technical needs clearly.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, and travel extensively for field assignments.
  • Valid UK driving license and a clean driving record, with the ability to travel to various locations across Scotland and beyond.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Film Production, Broadcast Media, Cinematography, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience with live broadcast production and complex multi-camera setups.
  • Familiarity with editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve) to understand post-production workflow and impact of camerawork.
  • Solid knowledge of grip and electric equipment, including fundamental lighting principles and techniques.
  • Experience with drone operation for aerial cinematography, holding relevant certifications if applicable (e.g., CAA PfCO or GVC).
