Job Description

Are you a vigilant, community-focused security professional looking to make a significant impact within a dynamic university setting? Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated Campus Security Officer to join a prestigious university client located in the vibrant Upper Beach area of Toronto. This isn’t just a security role; it’s an opportunity to be a crucial part of an academic community, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

In this vital position, you will serve as the front line of defense and support, maintaining a secure and welcoming environment across the university campus. You will conduct regular patrols, respond to incidents, and provide assistance while upholding university policies and procedures. The university environment is unique, requiring a blend of assertiveness and approachability, ensuring that security measures are implemented effectively while fostering a sense of trust and safety among all community members.

Your day will involve a variety of tasks, from monitoring access points and surveillance systems to investigating disturbances and preparing detailed reports. You’ll be expected to respond to emergencies swiftly and calmly, coordinating with internal teams and external emergency services as needed. This role demands excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to de-escalate potentially volatile situations with professionalism and empathy. You will be a visible presence, interacting with a diverse population, offering directions, assisting with inquiries, and generally contributing to a positive campus experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular foot and mobile patrols of university buildings, grounds, and parking areas to deter criminal activity and ensure a safe environment.
  • Monitor and operate surveillance equipment, access control systems, and alarm systems.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to all security alarms, emergencies, and calls for service, including medical incidents, fires, and disturbances.
  • Enforce university policies, regulations, and provincial trespass to property act, ensuring compliance by all campus users.
  • Provide clear and concise directions, assistance, and information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Investigate security incidents, document findings thoroughly, and prepare comprehensive incident reports.
  • Liaise effectively with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency services during incidents.
  • Administer first aid and CPR as required, maintaining relevant certifications.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and training sessions.
  • Identify and report potential security risks or safety hazards.

Required Skills

  • Valid Ontario Security Guard License.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification (Level C).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proven ability to de-escalate conflict and handle sensitive situations with tact and professionalism.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, security software).
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including prolonged standing, walking, and occasional lifting.
  • Customer service-oriented approach with a friendly and approachable demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a campus security, institutional security, or similar public-facing security role.
  • Post-secondary education in Criminology, Law Enforcement, Security Management, or a related field.
  • Valid G Class Ontario Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of university protocols and procedures.
