Job Description
Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Child Advocate with a strong legal background to join our Coquitlam team. This pivotal role involves providing comprehensive legal advocacy and support for children and youth who are involved in the child welfare system, family law disputes, or other legal proceedings affecting their well-being. As a Child Advocate – Legal, you will be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, ensuring their rights are protected and their best interests are paramount in all decisions. Your work will encompass direct client representation, legal research, case management, and collaboration with a diverse network of professionals including social workers, therapists, educators, and court personnel. This position demands exceptional legal acumen, a profound understanding of child development and trauma-informed practices, and an unwavering commitment to social justice. Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct legal representation to children and youth in child protection, family law, and other relevant legal matters.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support case strategies and arguments.
- Draft, prepare, and file legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and memorandums.
- Attend court hearings, mediations, and administrative proceedings on behalf of child clients.
- Interview children, parents, caregivers, and other relevant parties to gather information and assess needs.
- Collaborate effectively with social workers, therapists, guardians ad litem, and other professionals to ensure holistic support.
- Educate children and families about their legal rights and responsibilities in a clear and age-appropriate manner.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client files and case records in compliance with legal and organizational standards.
- Advocate fiercely for the child's best interests, ensuring their voice is heard throughout the legal process.
- Participate in community outreach and education initiatives related to child advocacy and legal rights.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Minimum 2-3 years of post-call experience in family law, child protection law, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Child, Family and Community Service Act (CFCSA) and other relevant provincial and federal legislation.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in explaining complex legal issues simply and empathetically.
- Proven ability to work effectively with children and youth, understanding their unique developmental needs and perspectives.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation abilities in complex legal scenarios.
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload effectively and work collaboratively under pressure.
- Cultural competency and sensitivity in working with diverse populations, including Indigenous communities.
- Proficiency in legal research software and standard office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in trauma-informed practice and child-centred advocacy approaches.
- Fluency in a second language relevant to the diverse communities in British Columbia (e.g., Punjabi, Mandarin, Tagalog).
- Experience working within non-profit or community legal services settings.
- Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution mechanisms for family and child protection matters.
- Post-graduate training or certifications in child advocacy, social work, or related fields.
