Job Description
Hiring.zycto is seeking a passionate and dedicated Civil Rights Lawyer to join our esteemed non-profit legal team in Hamilton. This pivotal role offers an extraordinary opportunity to advocate for individuals and communities whose civil liberties and human rights have been violated. As a Civil Rights Lawyer, you will be instrumental in addressing systemic injustices, fighting discrimination, and promoting equality across various facets of society. Your work will encompass a broad spectrum of civil rights issues, including racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, freedom of speech, due process, and privacy. You will engage in all stages of legal advocacy, from initial client intake and case development to complex litigation in provincial and federal courts, and alternative dispute resolution. Beyond the courtroom, you will play a crucial role in policy development, community education, and public awareness campaigns, working to effect lasting change and empower underrepresented populations. Key Responsibilities
- Manage a diverse caseload of civil rights matters, including litigation, administrative complaints, and policy advocacy.
- Conduct thorough legal research, fact-finding, and client interviews to build compelling cases.
- Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents with precision and clarity.
- Represent clients in court proceedings, hearings, mediations, and arbitrations.
- Collaborate with community partners, advocacy groups, and fellow legal professionals to advance civil rights initiatives.
- Participate in public education efforts, workshops, and legal clinics to empower community members.
- Monitor legislative developments and contribute to policy recommendations affecting civil liberties and human rights.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum 4 years of experience practicing law, with a significant focus on civil rights, human rights, or public interest litigation.
- Demonstrated expertise in Canadian constitutional law, charter rights, and anti-discrimination legislation.
- Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong oral advocacy and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and vulnerable populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with complex litigation and class action lawsuits.
- Fluency in French or other additional languages relevant to Hamilton's diverse population.
- Prior experience working within a non-profit organization or legal aid setting.
