Job Description

Hiring.zycto is on the lookout for a dynamic and dedicated Community Organizer – Activist to spearhead our initiatives in the vibrant Marda Loop community of Calgary. This pivotal role is designed for an individual with an unwavering commitment to social justice, a natural talent for galvanizing people, and a proven ability to translate community needs into actionable change. As our Community Organizer – Activist, you will be the heartbeat of our local engagement efforts, working directly with residents, local businesses, and community leaders to identify pressing issues, develop strategic campaigns, and foster a stronger, more inclusive neighbourhood.

You will be responsible for building genuine relationships, listening intently to diverse perspectives, and empowering community members to become agents of their own change. From conceptualizing and executing impactful outreach programs to mobilizing volunteers for various causes, your work will directly contribute to enhancing the quality of life and strengthening the social fabric of Marda Loop. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive community outreach and engagement strategies tailored for the Marda Loop area.
  • Organize and facilitate public meetings, workshops, forums, and community events to address local issues and gather input.
  • Recruit, train, motivate, and manage a diverse base of volunteers and local activists.
  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with community residents, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and government representatives.
  • Conduct thorough research and data collection on community concerns, social inequalities, and policy gaps relevant to Marda Loop.
  • Design, implement, and lead grassroots advocacy campaigns to influence local policy and promote social justice initiatives.
  • Represent Hiring.zycto at local council meetings, community association gatherings, and other public forums.
  • Develop compelling communication materials, including flyers, social media content, and press releases, to inform and mobilize the community.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of community organizing efforts and campaigns, adjusting strategies as needed.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and mediate discussions among diverse community stakeholders to foster consensus.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of direct experience in community organizing, advocacy, or related grassroots activism.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities, capable of inspiring action and conveying complex information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, mobilize, and lead volunteers and community members.
  • Proven project management skills, including planning, execution, and evaluation of community initiatives.
  • Deep understanding of local community dynamics, social issues, and political landscapes.
  • Proficiency in using social media and digital communication tools for outreach and campaign promotion.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, with a collaborative approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for community travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Community Development, Urban Studies, or a related field.
  • Prior experience living or working within the Marda Loop or broader Calgary SW area.
  • Bilingualism or multilingualism (e.g., English and an additional language common in Calgary).
  • Experience with CRM software or dedicated community engagement platforms.
  • Familiarity with local government structures and policy-making processes in Calgary.
