Job Description
Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Court Reporter (Stenographer) to join our professional team in Kanata, Ottawa. This crucial role involves the verbatim recording of court proceedings, depositions, hearings, and other legal events using stenotype equipment. As a Court Reporter, you will be instrumental in creating an accurate and impartial official record, ensuring the integrity and transparency of judicial processes. You will be responsible for transcribing these records into written format, often under strict deadlines, and providing copies to legal parties as required. Key Responsibilities
- Attend court proceedings, depositions, hearings, and other legal events to record verbatim testimony and statements.
- Operate stenotype machine proficiently to capture spoken words with high accuracy and speed.
- Maintain stenographic notes and backup recordings securely and confidentially.
- Transcribe recorded proceedings into accurate, certified legal transcripts within specified deadlines.
- Review and edit transcripts for grammatical errors, spelling, punctuation, and legal terminology.
- Certify the accuracy and completeness of all produced transcripts.
- Adhere strictly to all relevant legal statutes, court rules, and professional ethical guidelines.
- Manage scheduling and coordinate with legal counsel, court clerks, and other parties as needed.
- Maintain and troubleshoot stenotype equipment and related software.
- Keep abreast of advancements in court reporting technology and practices.
Required Skills
- Certified Court Reporter (CCR) or equivalent provincial certification (e.g., C.S.R. in some provinces).
- Minimum typing speed of 225 words per minute (WPM) with high accuracy.
- Proficiency in stenotype equipment and transcription software.
- Excellent command of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Strong understanding of legal terminology and court procedures.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with real-time reporting (CART or LiveNote).
- Post-secondary education in Court Reporting or Legal Studies.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
