Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking a dedicated and compassionate Crisis Counselor to join our essential Helpline team, operating from our Vancouver Convention Centre location. This vital role is at the forefront of mental health support, providing immediate, non-judgmental assistance to individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health crises, or contemplating suicide. As a Crisis Counselor, you will be the reassuring voice on the other end of the line, offering empathetic listening, de-escalation techniques, and practical support to callers from diverse backgrounds.

Our helpline is a critical lifeline for many, and your ability to remain calm under pressure, assess risk effectively, and guide callers towards safety and stability is paramount. You will engage in active listening to understand each caller’s unique situation, validate their feelings, and collaboratively explore coping strategies and resources. This role demands a high degree of emotional intelligence, resilience, and a profound commitment to human well-being. You will work within a supportive team structure, receiving regular supervision, ongoing training, and opportunities for debriefing to manage the emotional demands of the work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly and empathetically to incoming calls from individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health crises, or suicidal ideation.
  • Utilize active listening, validation, and rapport-building techniques to create a safe and supportive environment for callers.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments, including suicide risk assessments, and develop safety plans in collaboration with callers.
  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and problem-solving support to help callers manage immediate crises.
  • Offer information and referrals to appropriate mental health services, community resources, and long-term support options.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and concise documentation of all interactions in accordance with organizational policies and ethical guidelines.
  • Participate in regular supervision, team meetings, and ongoing professional development training.
  • Adhere to all confidentiality protocols and ethical standards relevant to crisis counseling and mental health support.
  • Collaborate with emergency services as needed in critical situations, following established protocols.

Required Skills

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Prior experience (2+ years) in crisis intervention, helpline services, or mental health support.
  • Certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) or equivalent.
  • Fluency in a second language (e.g., Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog) relevant to Vancouver's diverse population.
  • Familiarity with local mental health resources and community support networks in British Columbia.
