Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and meticulous School Custodian to join our team, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, and visitors within a vibrant school setting in the Golden Mile, Toronto area. This pivotal role involves more than just cleaning; it’s about contributing to a positive learning atmosphere where safety and hygiene are paramount. The successful candidate will be responsible for upholding the highest standards of cleanliness and operational readiness across all school facilities, including classrooms, washrooms, common areas, offices, and outdoor premises.
As a School Custodian, you will be an integral part of the daily operations, directly impacting the well-being and productivity of the entire school community. Your proactive approach to maintenance and your keen eye for detail will ensure that the school remains a conducive place for education and extracurricular activities. You will be entrusted with routine cleaning tasks, waste management, minor repairs, and maintaining inventory of cleaning supplies. Beyond the daily duties, this role calls for an individual who is reliable, takes initiative, and understands the critical importance of a sanitary and hazard-free environment, especially in an educational institution frequented by children and young adults. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, emptying trash receptacles, and dusting surfaces in classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, replenishing supplies as needed, and ensuring high standards of hygiene.
- Maintain cleanliness of cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other activity areas.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, and reporting larger maintenance issues to management.
- Ensure school premises are secure, including locking doors and windows, and setting alarms at the end of shifts.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, notifying supervisors when new stock is required.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment such as floor buffers, vacuums, and carpet cleaners.
- Assist with setting up and taking down equipment for school events and activities.
- Respond promptly to emergency cleaning needs and spills.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including proper handling and disposal of cleaning chemicals.
- Remove snow and ice from walkways and entrances during winter months, and maintain exterior grounds as needed.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment operation.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with staff, students, and visitors.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Capacity to follow instructions and safety guidelines meticulously.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Previous experience as a custodian or cleaner, particularly in a school or educational setting.
- Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) regulations.
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
