Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly meticulous and experienced Customs Officer to join our dynamic team in Brierley Hill, Birmingham. This critical role involves ensuring full compliance with all import and export customs regulations, tariffs, and duties for our diverse range of goods. As a Customs Officer, you will be instrumental in facilitating smooth cross-border movement, mitigating risks, and upholding the integrity of our supply chain operations. You will be responsible for the accurate and timely verification of customs declarations, ensuring all documentation is complete, correct, and adheres to the latest legal frameworks and international trade agreements. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and an in-depth understanding of customs procedures. You will liaise regularly with internal departments, external regulatory bodies, and freight forwarders, acting as a key point of contact for all customs-related inquiries. Key Responsibilities

  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of import and export customs declarations and associated documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant HMRC regulations, international trade laws, and company policies.
  • Categorize goods according to the Harmonized System (HS) codes and determine applicable tariffs and duties.
  • Conduct regular audits and checks on customs entries to identify and rectify discrepancies or potential issues.
  • Liaise with customs authorities, freight forwarders, and internal teams to resolve queries and facilitate clearances.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in customs legislation, tariffs, and trade agreements (e.g., BREXIT implications).
  • Prepare and submit necessary customs declarations, licenses, and permits.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to internal stakeholders on customs procedures and requirements.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal customs compliance procedures and training programs.
  • Manage and resolve customs-related disputes or penalty notices efficiently.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Customs Officer, Customs Clerk, or similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK customs regulations (HMRC), import/export procedures, and tariff classifications (HS codes).
  • Familiarity with customs software and electronic declaration systems (e.g., CHIEF, CDS).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant professional qualification or certification in Customs, International Trade, or Logistics.
  • Experience with AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) status and compliance.
  • Knowledge of specific industry regulations related to imported/exported goods.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to international trade.
