Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily herd health, including disease prevention, treatment, and vaccination protocols.
- Oversee and perform milking operations, ensuring proper hygiene and equipment maintenance.
- Implement and monitor breeding programs, including heat detection, artificial insemination (AI), and calving assistance.
- Develop and manage feed rations, ensuring nutritional requirements are met for various stages of lactation and growth.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of herd performance, health treatments, breeding, and milk production.
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Supervise and train junior farm staff as required, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Ensure compliance with all animal welfare standards, biosecurity protocols, and safety regulations.
- Identify and troubleshoot issues related to herd management, equipment, and facility maintenance.
- Participate in farm planning and decision-making processes related to herd management strategies.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in dairy herd management.
- Strong knowledge of dairy cattle health, nutrition, and reproduction.
- Proficiency in artificial insemination (AI) techniques.
- Ability to operate and maintain various farm equipment (e.g., tractors, skid steers).
- Excellent observational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong record-keeping and data management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to animal welfare and ethical farming practices.
- Valid G-class driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, or a related field.
- Experience with herd management software (e.g., DairyComp, PCDart).
- Certification in animal first aid or advanced animal care.
- Leadership or supervisory experience in a farm setting.
