Key Responsibilities
- Represent clients vigorously in criminal defense matters across all court levels (Provincial Court, Superior Court of Justice).
- Conduct thorough legal research, analysis, and investigation to build robust defense strategies.
- Draft and argue motions, legal briefs, and other court documents effectively.
- Engage in plea negotiations and settlement discussions with Crown Attorneys to achieve optimal client outcomes.
- Prepare witnesses, clients, and evidence meticulously for trials, hearings, and preliminary inquiries.
- Provide clear, compassionate, and timely communication to clients, ensuring they are fully informed and supported throughout their legal journey.
- Manage a demanding caseload efficiently, adhering to all deadlines and professional standards.
- Collaborate with legal support staff, paralegals, and other attorneys within the firm.
- Stay abreast of developments in criminal law, legal procedures, and case precedents.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from an accredited institution.
- Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum of 48 months of post-call experience practicing criminal defense law in Canada.
- Demonstrated expertise in litigation, including courtroom advocacy, cross-examination, and oral arguments.
- Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex cases simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, with an empathetic approach to client relations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a private practice setting.
- Familiarity with the Ottawa legal community and local court procedures.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a strong asset.
- A proven track record of successful outcomes in complex criminal defense cases.
- Experience with restorative justice practices or alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
