Job Description

Hiring.zycto is partnering with a prominent environmental consulting firm to find a dedicated and experienced Ecologist – Environmental to join their dynamic team in Ottawa. This critical role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wide range of ecological assessments and environmental impact studies for diverse projects across the region. As an Ecologist, you will be instrumental in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting ecological data to inform sustainable development and conservation strategies. You will work on various projects including infrastructure development, land use planning, natural resource management, and regulatory compliance, ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated at every stage.

Your expertise will directly impact the protection and enhancement of natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and species at risk. This position requires a strong blend of scientific knowledge, field experience, and excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and regulatory bodies. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys and assessments for various terrestrial, aquatic, and wetland ecosystems, including vegetation, wildlife, and species at risk.
  • Perform data analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of ecological information.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, environmental impact statements, and other regulatory documentation.
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies for ecological impacts.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal environmental legislation and policies (e.g., ESA, DFO, CEAA).
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, planners, and other specialists.
  • Assist in permit applications and regulatory approvals.
  • Participate in client meetings and stakeholder consultations.
  • Maintain accurate records and project documentation.
  • Provide ecological input and recommendations throughout project lifecycles.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in ecological field methods and data collection techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial environmental legislation (e.g., Ontario ESA).
  • Experience with species identification (flora and fauna) relevant to Ontario.
  • Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Valid Class G driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for field work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio., P.Geo., P.Eng. with environmental specialization).
  • Experience with wetland delineation and classification (e.g., Ontario Wetland Evaluation System).
  • Familiarity with environmental assessment processes and methodologies.
  • Certification in electrofishing, amphibian/reptile identification, or bird surveys.
