Key Responsibilities
- Receive and evaluate incoming emergency calls from the public, demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
- Quickly and accurately assess the nature of the emergency to determine the appropriate response required.
- Dispatch police, fire, or emergency medical services units to incident locations efficiently.
- Provide clear, concise, and often life-saving pre-arrival instructions to callers while units are en route.
- Maintain precise logs and records of all calls, dispatched units, and incident details using dispatch software.
- Monitor the status and location of emergency units, ensuring effective coordination and resource allocation.
- Communicate effectively with field units, providing updates and relaying critical information as it unfolds.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high-pressure environment, prioritizing urgent situations.
- Adhere strictly to all established protocols, procedures, and ethical guidelines for emergency dispatch.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to remain calm, composed, and focused under extreme pressure and in high-stress situations.
- Exceptional active listening and questioning skills to quickly ascertain critical information.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and sound judgment for rapid decision-making.
- Proficiency in basic computer operations and ability to learn new dispatch software quickly.
- High level of empathy and a genuine desire to assist individuals in distress.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a customer service or call centre environment.
- Familiarity with local geography and street names within the Greater Toronto Area.
- Proficiency in a second language, particularly those commonly spoken in Toronto.
- Completion of post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Criminology, Paramedicine).
