As an Entry-Level Environmental Health Officer, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health through the application of scientific principles, public health legislation, and community engagement. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of public facilities, food premises, childcare centres, and other regulated sites to ensure compliance with public health legislation and standards.
  • Investigate public health hazards, complaints, and disease outbreaks, collecting samples and evidence as required.
  • Provide education and consultation to businesses, community groups, and the public on environmental health issues and best practices.
  • Enforce public health regulations, issuing orders and recommendations where necessary to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
  • Prepare comprehensive inspection reports, investigation summaries, and other relevant documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, other government agencies, and community partners on various public health initiatives.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities related to environmental health incidents.
  • Stay informed on current environmental health trends, research, and legislative changes.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
  • Fundamental knowledge of public health principles, environmental health hazards, and relevant legislation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations, and public interactions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle for site visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligibility for certification or in the process of obtaining certification with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
  • Previous volunteer, internship, or co-op experience in a public health or regulatory environment.
  • Familiarity with local Coquitlam bylaws and community specific environmental health challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build rapport with diverse communities.
