Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Farm Manager to lead our agricultural operations in the vibrant Oakwood-Vaughan area of Toronto. This is a pivotal full-time role for an individual passionate about sustainable farming, operational excellence, and team leadership. As our Farm Manager, you will be entrusted with the complete oversight of our farm, from strategic planning and crop cultivation to resource management and team development. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of our farm, driving our mission to deliver high-quality produce to the local community while adhering to the highest environmental standards.

Your day-to-day will involve a dynamic blend of hands-on work and strategic decision-making. You will be responsible for meticulously planning and executing planting schedules, irrigation systems, nutrient management programs, and integrated pest management strategies. A deep understanding of soil health, crop rotation techniques, and climate-resilient farming practices will be essential to your success. Beyond the fields, you will manage a dedicated team of farmhands, fostering a safe, productive, and engaging work environment. This includes everything from hiring and training new staff to scheduling, performance reviews, and ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations.

Financial acumen is also key to this role. You will manage the farm’s budget, monitor expenditures, and identify opportunities for cost-efficiency without compromising quality or sustainability. This involves careful record-keeping, inventory management, and reporting on farm performance to senior management. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily farm operations, including planting, cultivation, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and harvesting activities.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive crop plans, ensuring optimal yields and quality while adhering to sustainable farming practices.
  • Manage, train, and supervise a team of farm workers, fostering a positive, productive, and safe working environment.
  • Monitor crop health and growth, accurately diagnose plant diseases or pest infestations, and implement timely and effective solutions.
  • Maintain detailed records of farm activities, production data, inventory, and equipment maintenance logs.
  • Develop and manage the farm's budget, track expenses, and optimize resource allocation to achieve financial targets.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant agricultural regulations, environmental protection laws, and occupational health and safety standards.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of farm machinery and equipment, scheduling routine inspections and repairs.
  • Implement and manage water conservation strategies and soil health initiatives, including composting and cover cropping.
  • Collaborate with sales, distribution, and marketing teams to ensure timely delivery of produce and market responsiveness.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in farm management or a similar leadership role within the agricultural sector.
  • Extensive knowledge of crop production cycles, soil science, irrigation systems, and integrated pest management.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with excellent team management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in operating and performing basic maintenance on farm machinery and equipment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping and inventory management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, outdoor environment and adapt to changing weather conditions.
  • Valid G-class driver's license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with organic farming practices, sustainable agriculture certifications, or greenhouse management.
  • Familiarity with local agricultural markets, supply chains, and consumer demands in Ontario.
  • Proficiency in farm management software for planning, tracking, and reporting.
  • Certification in pesticide application or specific agricultural machinery operation.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.
