This is an exciting, entry-level opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join Hiring.zycto as a Fisheries Crew Member for the upcoming seasonal field season. Based out of Airdrie, Alberta, but with fieldwork locations across various beautiful natural environments, this role offers a unique chance to contribute directly to vital fisheries management and conservation efforts. As a Fisheries Crew Member, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field operations. This seasonal position involves significant time working outdoors in diverse conditions, ranging from remote rivers and lakes to accessible streams. You’ll be involved in various aspects of fisheries fieldwork, gaining hands-on experience in data collection, equipment handling, and supporting senior technicians. This is an excellent stepping stone for anyone looking to build a career in environmental science, aquaculture, or natural resource management, providing a foundational understanding of aquatic ecosystems and field methodologies. You will assist with deploying and retrieving various types of fishing gear, including nets, traps, and electrofishing equipment, always under the direct supervision of experienced personnel. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the deployment, operation, and retrieval of various fishing gear, including nets, traps, and electrofishing equipment, under supervision.
- Accurately collect, record, and process biological and environmental data in the field.
- Perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and organization of field equipment, vehicles, and vessels.
- Strictly adhere to all safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and environmental regulations.
- Participate in the setup, maintenance, and teardown of field camps, including shared living arrangements.
- Provide active support to senior technicians and biologists in daily field operations, problem-solving, and logistics.
- Operate ATVs, boats, or other field vehicles safely, as required and after receiving appropriate training.
- Contribute to a positive and cooperative team environment during extensive fieldwork periods.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs) over uneven terrain.
- Willingness to work long hours outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, insects).
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a proactive attitude towards learning new skills.
- Excellent team player with effective verbal communication skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Previous experience with outdoor labor, camping, hiking, or remote fieldwork.
- Basic knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, fish identification, or environmental sampling techniques.
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or equivalent boating experience.
