Job Description
This role requires a meticulous and highly skilled Hazardous Waste Technician, Certified, to join our dedicated team in Ottawa. As a key player, you will be instrumental in the safe and compliant management of various hazardous materials, ensuring strict adherence to all federal, provincial, and municipal regulations. Your daily tasks will span from identification and classification to packaging, labeling, transportation preparation, and documentation of hazardous waste streams. We are seeking an individual who not only possesses the necessary certifications and technical proficiency but also demonstrates an unwavering commitment to safety protocols and environmental stewardship. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site hazardous waste identification, classification, and segregation in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g., WHMIS, TDG, MOECC).
- Safely package, label, and manifest hazardous waste materials for storage, transportation, and disposal.
- Perform chemical compatibility assessments and ensure proper handling procedures for various waste streams.
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment used in hazardous waste management, including forklifts, drum dollies, and spill response gear.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records, including manifests, waste profiles, inventory logs, and incident reports.
- Respond promptly and effectively to spills, leaks, and other hazardous material incidents, following established emergency response protocols.
- Conduct regular inspections of waste storage areas to ensure compliance, proper containment, and facility safety.
- Provide guidance and training to other team members on hazardous waste handling best practices and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with clients, regulators, and internal teams to ensure efficient and compliant waste management solutions.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, operational efficiency, and environmental performance.
Required Skills
- Valid Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification (40-hour preferred).
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification.
- WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certification.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in hazardous waste management or a related environmental field.
- Strong understanding of federal, provincial (Ontario), and municipal environmental regulations.
- Proficiency in operating material handling equipment (e.g., forklift certification).
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to accurately complete documentation.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and practices.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy containers (up to 50 lbs) and work in various environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience with specific waste management software or tracking systems.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Confined Space Entry certification.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
