Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough and impartial investigations into human rights complaints, including those related to discrimination and harassment, ensuring adherence to established procedures and legal standards.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to government departments, staff, and the public on the interpretation and application of human rights legislation, particularly the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Develop, facilitate, and deliver comprehensive human rights training and educational programs to raise awareness and promote compliance within the organization and the broader community.
- Perform research and analysis on emerging human rights issues, trends, and best practices to inform policy development and strategic initiatives.
- Assist in the review and development of organizational policies, procedures, and practices to ensure they are consistent with human rights principles and legislative requirements.
- Facilitate constructive dispute resolution and mediation processes to resolve complaints informally and promote reconciliation where appropriate.
- Collaborate effectively with community groups, advocacy organizations, other government agencies, and stakeholders to advance human rights objectives.
- Prepare detailed investigative reports, policy briefs, and recommendations for senior management and relevant committees.
- Represent the organization at various forums, meetings, and public events related to human rights.
- Maintain meticulous records and case files in accordance with privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
Required Skills
- A Bachelor's degree in Law, Social Sciences, Public Administration, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in human rights investigations, policy analysis, or advocacy within a legal, government, or public sector environment.
- In-depth knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and other relevant human rights instruments.
- Exceptional investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to gather and assess complex information.
- Superior oral and written communication skills, capable of preparing clear, concise reports, delivering engaging presentations, and providing articulate advice.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct sensitive interviews, build rapport, and manage difficult conversations with empathy and professionalism.
- Proficiency in conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation techniques.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases and priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master's degree in Law, Social Justice, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Professional certification in mediation or alternative dispute resolution.
- Experience with accessibility standards and legislation, such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
- Bilingualism in English and French, or proficiency in other languages relevant to Mississauga's diverse population.
- Proven experience in developing and delivering adult education or training programs.
- Familiarity with case management software and systems.
