Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive nursing care for critically ill patients within the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring for adverse reactions and documenting all interventions meticulously.
  • Manage and maintain complex medical equipment including ventilators, IV pumps, cardiac monitors, and other life-support systems.
  • Perform rapid assessment and intervention during medical emergencies, utilizing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and adjust patient care plans.
  • Provide empathetic support and clear communication to patients and their families, educating them on the patient's condition and treatment plan.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately and completely in electronic health records, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development to maintain and enhance critical care nursing competencies.

Required Skills

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent, continuous experience as a Registered Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.
  • Proficiency in administering complex medications and managing advanced technological equipment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective team collaboration and patient/family interaction.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and adapt to changing patient needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Critical Care Nursing Certificate (e.g., CNA certification in Critical Care).
  • Experience with specialty populations (e.g., neuro ICU, cardiac ICU) or specific advanced procedures.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN).
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) if applicable to unit specialty.
