Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough legal research using various databases and resources to support legal arguments and case strategies.
- Draft and review a wide range of legal documents, including pleadings, motions, affidavits, agreements, and correspondence.
- Manage and organize complex legal files, ensuring all documents are accurately filed, indexed, and easily accessible.
- Prepare and file court documents, ensuring strict adherence to court rules and deadlines.
- Liaise effectively with clients, court staff, opposing counsel, and other external parties, maintaining professional communication.
- Assist lawyers in all stages of litigation, including trial preparation, discovery, and settlement conferences.
- Summarize discoveries, transcripts, and other evidence for lawyers' review.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and legal procedures.
- Handle sensitive and confidential client information with the utmost discretion and integrity.
- Schedule appointments, hearings, meetings, and manage lawyers' calendars efficiently.
Required Skills
- Successful completion of a Law Clerk diploma or equivalent legal education.
- Proven experience as a Law Clerk, Paralegal, or Legal Assistant in a legal firm setting.
- Exceptional legal research and writing abilities with a strong command of grammar and syntax.
- Proficiency in legal software and case management systems (e.g., PC Law, Time Matters).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Superior organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluency in French (both written and spoken) is a significant asset.
- Experience in specific practice areas such as litigation, real estate, corporate law, or family law.
- Familiarity with Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and local Ottawa court protocols.
- Member in good standing with the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO).
