Job Description

We are seeking an exceptionally skilled and dedicated Marine Pilot to join our team, serving the critical waterways around Pointe-Claire, Montreal. This full-time role offers an unparalleled opportunity to leverage your expert navigation and ship-handling skills in one of Canada’s busiest and most dynamic maritime environments. As a Marine Pilot, you will be entrusted with the monumental responsibility of guiding vessels of various sizes and types safely through intricate channels, ports, and restricted waters. Your day-to-day will involve boarding incoming and outgoing ships, establishing command of the vessel’s bridge, and providing expert counsel to the ship’s Master on safe passage. You will utilize advanced navigation systems, communicate effectively with port authorities, tugboats, and other maritime traffic, all while upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental protection. This role is paramount to preventing accidents, protecting marine life, and ensuring the efficient flow of international commerce. Key Responsibilities

  • Board vessels entering and departing designated pilotage areas, assuming conn or advisory control.
  • Safely guide ships through challenging waterways, including narrow channels, rivers, and congested port areas, adhering to all local and international regulations.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to the ship's Master regarding navigation, maneuvering, and operational procedures.
  • Monitor vessel movements, weather conditions, currents, and other maritime traffic to ensure safe transit.
  • Communicate effectively with vessel crew, port authorities, tugboat operators, and other stakeholders.
  • Implement and uphold stringent safety protocols and environmental protection measures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local hydrography, aids to navigation, and regulatory changes.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, taking decisive action to mitigate risks.
  • Complete all necessary logbooks, reports, and documentation accurately and promptly.

Required Skills

  • Valid Canadian Marine Pilot License for the specified pilotage area.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive maritime experience, with significant time in command positions (Master or Chief Mate).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ship handling, maneuvering characteristics, and propulsion systems for various vessel types.
  • Exceptional understanding of local hydrography, currents, tides, weather patterns, and navigational hazards.
  • Proficiency in radar, ECDIS, GPS, and other advanced navigation equipment.
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written, in English (French proficiency an asset).
  • Demonstrated ability to make rapid, sound decisions under pressure.
  • Impeccable safety record and commitment to maritime safety standards.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties, including boarding vessels in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master Mariner (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.
  • Experience with Port VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) systems and procedures.
  • Proficiency in French.
  • Additional certifications in specialized maritime operations or safety management.
  • Experience training junior pilots or mentoring maritime professionals.
