Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of complex medical laboratory tests and analyses on patient samples (blood, urine, tissues, etc.) using automated and manual techniques across multiple disciplines (e.g., hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank).
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
- Adhere strictly to established quality control procedures, validating results, recognizing discrepancies, and taking corrective actions.
- Process patient samples, prepare reagents, and maintain accurate records of all tests performed and results obtained in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Interpret and report laboratory results accurately and efficiently, communicating critical findings to healthcare providers in a timely manner.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new laboratory methods, procedures, and technologies.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, laboratory policies, and accreditation standards (e.g., IQMH, CSA).
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory department.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and laboratory data at all times.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize patient care outcomes.
Required Skills
- Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
- Certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
- Minimum 3 years of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in a hospital setting
- Demonstrated proficiency in multiple laboratory disciplines (e.g., hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank)
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality assurance and control principles
- Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and standard office software
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and documenting results
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized certification or advanced training in a specific laboratory discipline.
- Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies in a lab setting.
- Previous experience with a variety of automated laboratory analyzers and platforms.
- Ability to mentor junior staff or students.
