Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough analysis of mortgage loan applications, including credit reports, income, assets, and property appraisals, to determine borrower eligibility and risk.
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with company policies, federal and provincial regulations, and investor guidelines.
- Evaluate complex financial statements, tax returns, and employment verifications.
- Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and clients to gather necessary documentation and clarify information.
- Approve, suspend, or decline loans based on comprehensive risk assessment and adherence to guidelines.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory changes.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new underwriting procedures and policies.
- Manage a pipeline of mortgage applications efficiently, ensuring timely processing and decision-making.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter.
- Proven knowledge of mortgage loan products, policies, and regulations (e.g., OSFI, CMHC, Genworth, Canada Guaranty).
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, credit analysis, and risk assessment.
- Proficiency in mortgage origination software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience with complex self-employed borrower applications.
- Professional certifications such as Mortgage Broker or Underwriter designation.
