Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity, refraction, slit lamp examinations, tonometry, and fundoscopy.
- Diagnose and manage various ocular conditions and diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
- Prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids, providing patient education on proper use and care.
- Perform contact lens fittings, assessments, and follow-up care for a diverse patient base.
- Educate patients on preventative eye care practices, lifestyle choices affecting eye health, and common ocular conditions.
- Collaborate with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals for co-management of complex cases and timely referrals.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with professional and legal standards.
- Manage ocular emergencies and provide urgent care as needed.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in optometric practices and technologies through continuous professional development.
Required Skills
- Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited institution.
- Current and unrestricted license to practice Optometry in Ontario.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as an Optometrist.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and managing common ocular conditions and diseases.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centered approach.
- Ability to build rapport with patients of all ages and explain complex information clearly.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in record-keeping.
- Competency with modern optometric diagnostic equipment and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with advanced diagnostic tools such as OCT, visual field testing, and retinal photography.
- Specialization or interest in specific areas like pediatrics, low vision, or specialty contact lens fitting.
- Membership in relevant professional associations (e.g., Canadian Association of Optometrists, Ontario Association of Optometrists).
- Fluency in additional languages relevant to the local community.
