Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive legal research and analysis on existing and proposed legislation, regulations, and policy frameworks.
- Provide expert legal advice and recommendations on policy development, implementation, and review processes.
- Draft, review, and edit a variety of policy documents, briefing notes, reports, and legal opinions.
- Identify and assess legal risks associated with policy proposals and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Engage with internal departments and external stakeholders to gather input, build consensus, and communicate policy implications.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes at local, provincial, and federal levels, advising on their impact.
- Support the development of communication strategies for new policies and legislative changes.
- Assist in the preparation for consultations, public hearings, and other policy-related forums.
- Contribute to training and knowledge-sharing initiatives on legal and policy matters within the organization.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
- Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in legal practice, policy development, or a related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in Canadian administrative law, public law, and legislative drafting principles.
- Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.
- Proven ability to conduct thorough legal research and synthesize findings effectively.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Policy, Law, or a related discipline.
- Experience working within a government agency, non-profit organization, or a highly regulated industry.
- Familiarity with policy analysis frameworks and program evaluation methodologies.
- Proficiency in project management and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
