Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Director and Production Designer to understand the creative vision and specific prop requirements for each project.
- Conduct extensive research to source, design, or create props that align with the script, period, and aesthetic of the film.
- Develop comprehensive prop lists and budgets, ensuring all acquisitions and creations remain within financial parameters.
- Procure, rent, or construct props, utilizing a network of vendors, artisans, and historical resources.
- Manage and maintain an organized inventory of all props, ensuring their availability, condition, and safe storage.
- Supervise and mentor prop assistants, delegating tasks and overseeing their contributions to prop preparation and set dressing.
- Ensure all props are safe, functional, and meet all relevant safety standards for use by actors and crew.
- Oversee the placement, handling, and strike of props on set during production, making real-time adjustments as needed.
- Address unexpected prop needs or changes quickly and resourcefully during production.
- Manage prop returns, storage, and disposal post-production.
Required Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Prop Master or Senior Prop Assistant in film or television production.
- Proven ability to research, source, and create a wide variety of props, from period-specific to modern and fantastical.
- Strong understanding of film production processes and on-set etiquette.
- Exceptional organizational, budgeting, and inventory management skills.
- Proficiency in various crafting techniques, including carpentry, painting, distressing, and basic electronics.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively with diverse teams.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate various vehicles for prop transport.
- Knowledge of safety protocols related to prop handling, firearms (blanks), and potentially hazardous materials.
