Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Transit Planner to join our growing team in Yellowknife, NT. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and enhancement of public transportation services in a vibrant northern community. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future of mobility, ensuring efficient, accessible, and sustainable transit options for residents. You will be instrumental in conducting research, analyzing data, developing planning recommendations, and collaborating with various stakeholders to improve existing routes, introduce new services, and integrate transit with broader urban development goals. This position requires a strong understanding of transit planning principles, excellent analytical capabilities, and a passion for community-focused solutions in a cold-weather environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis on existing transit operations, ridership patterns, and demographic trends.
  • Develop and evaluate short-term and long-term transit service plans, including route adjustments, scheduling optimization, and service expansion proposals.
  • Prepare detailed reports, presentations, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with municipal government, community groups, and other agencies to integrate transit planning with land use, economic development, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
  • Utilize GIS software and other planning tools for mapping, data visualization, and spatial analysis.
  • Assist in the development of transit-related policies, funding applications, and public engagement strategies.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of transit services, recommending adjustments based on performance metrics and community feedback.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in public transit planning or a related transportation field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Understanding of public engagement principles and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Urban Planning or Transportation Planning.
  • Experience working in northern or remote communities.
  • Familiarity with transit modelling software (e.g., Remix, PTV Visum/Vissim).
  • Professional certification (e.g., RPP, P.Eng).
  • Knowledge of Canadian transit policy and funding mechanisms.
