Job Description

As a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) – Professional at Hiring.zycto, you will be instrumental in upholding our commitment to the highest standards of radiation protection across all our operations. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive management of radiation safety programs, ensuring strict adherence to federal and provincial regulations, as well as industry best practices. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of radiation safety, from source management and waste disposal to personnel monitoring and emergency response planning. This position requires a proactive individual with exceptional technical expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and an unwavering dedication to fostering a culture of safety. You will serve as the primary expert and point of contact for all radiation safety matters, guiding operational teams and ensuring a secure working environment for all employees. Your analytical skills will be critical in assessing potential risks, while your communication abilities will be essential in training staff and liaising with regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company's comprehensive radiation safety program, policies, and procedures in accordance with all applicable federal (CNSC) and provincial regulations.
  • Oversee the safe use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices.
  • Conduct regular radiation surveys, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance and identify potential hazards.
  • Manage personnel dosimetry programs, including monitoring, record-keeping, and dose assessment.
  • Provide expert advice and training to staff on radiation safety practices, emergency procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate all radiation-related incidents, prepare detailed reports, and implement corrective actions.
  • Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (e.g., CNSC) during inspections, audits, and licensing processes.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for radiation incidents.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records of all radioactive sources and devices.
  • Stay abreast of new regulations, technologies, and best practices in radiation safety.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in radiation safety, with at least 3 years as a designated Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Proven expertise in radiation protection principles, practices, and instrumentation.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian federal (CNSC) and provincial radiation safety regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk assessment and incident investigation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for training and regulatory liaison.
  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging safety training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Professional certification in Health Physics or Radiation Protection (e.g., CRPA(R)).
  • Experience with sealed and unsealed radioactive sources in industrial, healthcare, or research settings.
  • Knowledge of waste management protocols for radioactive materials.
  • Experience with radioactive materials licensing and permitting processes.
