Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repair of railway tracks, including rails, sleepers, ballast, and points.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in railway signalling equipment, power systems, and overhead line equipment (if applicable).
  • Operate and maintain specialized railway tools and heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere strictly to all railway safety regulations, operational procedures, and environmental guidelines.
  • Respond promptly to emergency call-outs for track or equipment failures, day or night.
  • Complete accurate documentation of all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineering teams, operational staff, and contractors to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Conduct track measurements and adjustments to maintain gauge, alignment, and level.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with industry best practices and technological advancements.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in railway track or equipment maintenance.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and specialized railway equipment.
  • Demonstrable understanding of railway safety protocols (e.g., PTS – Personal Track Safety).
  • Physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and challenging terrains.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Rail Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Relevant certifications in specific railway equipment or systems (e.g., signalling, overhead lines).
  • Experience with Network Rail standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of track geometry and associated maintenance techniques.
  • First Aid at Work certification.
