This demanding yet highly rewarding role requires a vigilant and skilled individual dedicated to upholding the highest standards of track and equipment maintenance. Your daily activities will involve comprehensive inspections, proactive preventative maintenance, and rapid response to repair various railway assets including tracks, points, crossings, signalling equipment interfaces, and associated lineside apparatus. You will meticulously diagnose faults, implement effective solutions, and utilize a range of specialized tools and machinery to execute repairs and upgrades. This includes everything from replacing sleepers and rails to adjusting track geometry and maintaining points operation mechanisms.

Adherence to stringent safety protocols, railway operating rules, and industry regulations (such as those set by Network Rail and the ORR) is paramount. This requires a keen eye for detail, a methodical approach, and an unwavering commitment to safe working practices, often in challenging weather conditions or during night shifts when lines are closed for maintenance. You’ll be expected to understand and apply line closure procedures, work within strict timescales, and ensure all work is completed to specified engineering standards. Collaborating closely with your team and other rail professionals, you will contribute directly to the uninterrupted and secure movement of trains, playing a crucial part in the operational efficiency and public safety of our national rail network.

You will be responsible for accurate record-keeping and reporting of all maintenance activities, ensuring compliance and contributing to future planning. We offer a dynamic, hands-on work environment where your technical expertise directly translates into tangible results and contributes significantly to the smooth functioning of vital public services. Your contributions will directly impact millions of passengers and freight movements, ensuring a reliable and safe journey for everyone who depends on the rail system.
