Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of residential and commercial real estate transactions from initial instruction to post-closing.
- Draft, review, and negotiate various real estate agreements, including purchase and sale agreements, mortgages, and leases.
- Conduct thorough title searches, resolve title issues, and ensure clear title for all transactions.
- Communicate effectively with clients, lenders, real estate agents, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth closings.
- Advise clients on legal rights, obligations, and potential risks related to real estate matters.
- Prepare and register all necessary legal documents with the appropriate land registry offices.
- Oversee financial aspects of transactions, including managing trust accounts and preparing statements of adjustments.
- Stay current with developments in real estate law and practice in Ontario.
- Mentor junior staff and legal assistants as required.
Required Skills
- Called to the Bar in Ontario and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience practicing real estate law, with a strong focus on closings.
- In-depth knowledge of Ontario real estate statutes, regulations, and common law principles.
- Exceptional drafting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with clients.
- Proven ability to manage a high volume of files efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with legal research tools and standard office software.
- High level of professionalism and ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with legal practice management software (e.g., Clio, PCLaw).
- Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with complex commercial real estate transactions.
- An established network within the Ottawa real estate community.
