Key Responsibilities

  • Assess client needs, interests, and abilities to develop individualized recreational therapy treatment plans.
  • Implement a wide range of therapeutic recreation interventions, including arts and crafts, music, sports, games, community outings, and adaptive recreation.
  • Monitor and document client progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary to meet evolving needs and goals.
  • Collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other therapists, to ensure coordinated and holistic client care.
  • Educate clients and their families on the benefits of recreational activities for health and well-being.
  • Maintain a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for all recreational therapy sessions.
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and relevant professional standards and ethical guidelines.
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of group recreational therapy programs.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Recreational Therapy or a related field (e.g., Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology with a specialization in Therapeutic Recreation).
  • Current certification or eligibility for certification with the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA) or provincial equivalent (e.g., TRO).
  • Strong understanding of therapeutic recreation principles, theories, and practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a client-centered approach.
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation and communication.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead diverse recreational activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior volunteer or practicum experience in a healthcare or community setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the diverse Toronto community.
