Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including physical examination, vital signs, and patient history review, to identify respiratory needs.
- Administer prescribed respiratory treatments, such as aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, and oxygen therapy, according to physician orders.
- Initiate, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilation and other life support equipment, adjusting parameters as clinically indicated.
- Collect and analyze arterial and venous blood gas samples to assess patient oxygenation, ventilation, and acid-base status.
- Respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies (e.g., code blues, rapid responses) and participate in airway management procedures.
- Educate patients and their families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and proper use of respiratory equipment.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient care activities, interventions, and outcomes in electronic health records.
- Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of respiratory therapy equipment.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize patient care plans and achieve desired outcomes.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and professional development activities to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's or Advanced Diploma in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
- Current registration and good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated ability to perform respiratory assessments and interventions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Empathy, compassion, and a patient-centered approach to care.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior clinical placement experience in diverse acute care settings.
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Membership in a professional organization such as the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario (RTSO) or the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT).
