Key Responsibilities
- Identify, assess, and monitor legal and regulatory risks relevant to the company’s operations and strategic objectives.
- Provide expert legal advice and guidance on risk management matters, including contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, data privacy, and intellectual property.
- Develop, implement, and periodically review internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Lead or participate in internal investigations related to compliance breaches, ethical concerns, or legal disputes, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., finance, operations, IT, HR) to embed risk management best practices into daily activities and new initiatives.
- Stay abreast of changes in legal and regulatory landscapes, providing proactive updates and recommendations to senior management.
- Assist in the preparation and review of legal documents, contracts, and agreements, ensuring legal soundness and risk mitigation.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to support risk assessments and strategic decisions.
- Deliver training and awareness programs to employees on legal, regulatory, and compliance topics to foster a strong risk culture.
Required Skills
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from an accredited institution.
- Current license to practice law in Ontario, Canada.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in risk management, compliance, or corporate legal roles, preferably within financial services or a regulated industry.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian regulatory frameworks, including privacy laws (e.g., PIPEDA), anti-money laundering (AML), and consumer protection regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, and mitigate complex legal and regulatory risks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to non-legal stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with enterprise risk management (ERM) frameworks.
- Certifications such as Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) or Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP).
- Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic corporate environment.
- Familiarity with international legal and regulatory standards.
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to Canada’s diverse population.
