Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive media strategies to promote scientific discoveries and institutional initiatives.
  • Translate complex scientific research and data into clear, concise, and engaging content for a wide range of media, including press releases, articles, social media, video scripts, and presentations.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with journalists, reporters, and media professionals specializing in science, technology, and innovation sectors.
  • Act as a primary media contact, coordinating interviews, providing background information, and preparing subject matter experts for media appearances.
  • Monitor media coverage, analyze trends, and report on the effectiveness of communication efforts.
  • Create and manage content for digital platforms, ensuring consistent messaging and brand voice across all channels.
  • Collaborate with internal research teams and leadership to identify compelling stories and ensure scientific accuracy in all communications.
  • Organize and execute media events, press conferences, and public outreach activities.
  • Contribute to crisis communication planning and execution related to scientific topics.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English (French is a strong asset for Montreal).
  • Proven ability to translate complex scientific information into engaging and understandable language for non-expert audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations, including pitching stories, building journalist relationships, and managing media inquiries.
  • Strong understanding of various media platforms (print, broadcast, digital, social media) and best practices for each.
  • Proficiency in content creation tools and platforms (e.g., video editing software, graphic design basics, social media management).
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills to interpret scientific data and extract key messages.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a scientific discipline, journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • Fluency in French (both written and spoken).
  • Previous experience working in a research institution, academic setting, or scientific industry.
  • Experience with public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices for scientific content.
  • A portfolio demonstrating successful science communication projects across various media.
