Job Description

Hiring.zycto is actively seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our growing utility team in Toronto. This pivotal role will be instrumental in the meticulous planning, innovative design, comprehensive analysis, and strategic optimization of our critical transmission and distribution infrastructure, ensuring the reliable, safe, and efficient delivery of power to our valued customers across the region. The successful candidate will leverage their deep technical acumen and leadership skills to spearhead complex engineering projects, guiding them from initial conceptualization through to successful implementation, consistently adhering to stringent industry best practices, prevailing regulatory standards, and our rigorous internal safety protocols. This includes overseeing all stages from feasibility studies and detailed design to commissioning and post-implementation reviews.

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you will be entrusted with a diverse and challenging portfolio of assignments. Your responsibilities will span comprehensive grid stability studies, intricate fault analysis, sophisticated protection scheme design, and the seamless integration of new generation sources—with a particular focus on renewable energy supplements—into our existing, evolving grid architecture. You will be expected to utilize cutting-edge power system simulation software extensively to model, simulate, and accurately predict system behavior under various operating conditions, proactively identifying potential vulnerabilities and developing robust, scalable solutions. This role demands a proactive and analytical individual who not only possesses the capability to solve intricate technical problems but also excels at articulating complex technical findings and strategic recommendations with clarity and precision to both highly technical teams and non-technical executive stakeholders. Your contributions will be vital to our capital project planning, accurate budget estimation, and the formulation of long-term strategic blueprints for grid expansion and modernization. Our unwavering commitment to innovation means you’ll be at the forefront, with ample opportunities to explore and implement smart grid technologies, advanced energy storage solutions, and sophisticated control systems, thereby actively shaping the future of our energy landscape. This is more than just an engineering role; it’s a unique opportunity to contribute to the backbone of critical infrastructure that powers homes, businesses, and industries across our entire service territory, making a tangible and lasting impact on community resilience, environmental sustainability, and economic vitality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute complex power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and harmonic analysis.
  • Design and develop protection schemes for transmission lines, substations, and generation assets, ensuring system reliability and safety.
  • Perform detailed analysis for the integration of renewable energy sources (solar, wind) and energy storage systems into the grid.
  • Prepare technical specifications, engineering reports, and detailed design documents for various utility projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, planning, and construction, to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, codes (e.g., NERC, IESO, local utility standards), and safety regulations.
  • Contribute to the development of capital expenditure plans, project scoping, and budgetary estimates.
  • Evaluate new technologies and solutions to enhance grid efficiency, reliability, and resilience.
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to management, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders.

Required Skills

  • Strong proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., PSS/E, PSCAD, ETAP, CYME, EMTP).
  • Expert knowledge of power system theory, including symmetrical components, power flow, and transient analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in protection relaying principles and applications for utility grids.
  • Understanding of substation design principles and equipment specifications.
  • Familiarity with NERC, IESO, or similar ISO/RTO operational and planning standards.
  • Proven project management skills, including scope definition, scheduling, and budget control.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
