Job Description

Hiring.zycto is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Shelter Worker to join our team for the night shift in Vancouver. This critical role is situated within a supportive community environment, providing essential overnight services to vulnerable individuals. As a Night Shift Shelter Worker, you will be a beacon of stability and care, ensuring a safe, respectful, and therapeutic environment for residents during non-business hours. Your primary responsibility will involve monitoring the facility, responding to resident needs and emergencies, and maintaining a structured yet welcoming atmosphere that promotes dignity and well-being. This position demands a high degree of empathy, discretion, and the ability to handle challenging situations with calm professionalism. You will play a pivotal role in upholding facility policies and procedures, documenting incidents, and collaborating with morning staff to ensure seamless transitions. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the shelter premises and residents throughout the night to ensure safety and security.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to resident inquiries, concerns, and emergencies, including medical and behavioral situations.
  • Conduct regular rounds to ensure adherence to facility rules and identify potential issues.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all activities, incidents, and resident interactions during the shift.
  • Assist residents with basic needs as required, including access to amenities and resources.
  • De-escalate conflicts and mediate disputes between residents using non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Enforce shelter policies and procedures consistently and fairly.
  • Collaborate with day shift staff by providing comprehensive handovers and sharing critical information.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Support a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents, respecting diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in social services, healthcare, or a related field, particularly in a shelter or community support setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and effective in crisis situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a compassionate and non-judgmental approach.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications for record-keeping and incident reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use issues.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and support services in Vancouver.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training or equivalent.
