Job Description

This role is for an experienced Sommelier to join a dynamic hospitality team operating within the distinguished CBC Museum in Toronto. As a Sommelier, you will be the arbiter of our wine program, a passionate advocate for the world of viticulture, and a key contributor to our guests’ unparalleled dining experiences. This isn’t merely about serving wine; it’s about crafting a narrative with each selection, guiding guests through diverse appellations, and enhancing their culinary journey. Key Responsibilities

  • Curate and maintain an extensive, diverse, and well-balanced wine list, including spirits and beers, that complements the venue's culinary offerings.
  • Provide expert recommendations to guests, guiding them through selections based on their preferences, menu pairings, and budget, ensuring an exceptional dining experience.
  • Manage all aspects of wine cellar operations, including inventory control, ordering, receiving, stocking, and proper storage conditions to ensure optimal quality and freshness.
  • Conduct regular wine tastings and educational sessions for front-of-house staff to enhance their knowledge, service skills, and confidence in wine recommendations.
  • Monitor and manage beverage costs, conduct sales analyses, and implement strategies to optimize profitability without compromising quality.
  • Maintain accurate records of all beverage transactions, ensuring compliance with licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wine suppliers, distributors, and representatives to ensure access to premium products and competitive pricing.
  • Handle guest inquiries and feedback regarding beverages with professionalism and resolve any issues to ensure complete guest satisfaction.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, new vintages, and emerging regions to continuously evolve and improve the beverage program.

Required Skills

  • Certified Sommelier designation (e.g., CMS, WSET Level 3 or higher)
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience as a Sommelier or Assistant Sommelier in a reputable fine dining establishment or luxury hotel
  • Exceptional knowledge of classic and contemporary wines, spirits, and beers from major global regions
  • Proven ability to manage inventory, control costs, and develop profitable wine programs
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with a natural ability to engage and educate guests and staff
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Fluency in English; additional language skills are a plus
  • Ability to lift and carry cases of wine (up to 40 lbs) and stand for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Sommelier certification (CMS Advanced Sommelier or WSET Diploma)
  • Experience working in a venue with a significant cultural or historical presence
  • Proficiency with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management software
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train junior staff effectively
  • Experience with cellar design and expansion projects
