Job Description

We are seeking an exceptionally skilled and dedicated Precision Tool Maker to join our dynamic team in Edmonton, Alberta. As a critical member of our manufacturing operations, you will be instrumental in the creation, repair, and maintenance of high-precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in our advanced production processes. This role demands a keen eye for detail, an unwavering commitment to accuracy, and a comprehensive understanding of metallurgy, machining principles, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). You will work with state-of-the-art machinery, including CNC mills, lathes, grinders, and EDM equipment, to produce components with tight tolerances that meet our rigorous quality standards.

You will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and production teams to troubleshoot issues, implement design improvements, and contribute to the continuous refinement of our manufacturing capabilities. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, repair, and maintain precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges according to blueprints, engineering specifications, and established standards.
  • Operate a wide range of precision machine tools including CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines, and conventional machining equipment.
  • Perform intricate setups, programming adjustments, and operation of CNC machinery to produce components with tolerances as tight as +/- 0.0001 inches.
  • Inspect finished tools and dies for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, optical comparators, and CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines).
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to analyze tool performance, troubleshoot manufacturing issues, and recommend design modifications for improved efficiency and quality.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tooling and machinery to ensure optimal performance and extend tool life.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior machinists or apprentices as required.
  • Document work performed, including repair logs, maintenance schedules, and tooling inventories.

Required Skills

  • Journeyman Tool Maker certification or equivalent inter-provincial red seal.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a Precision Tool Maker in a manufacturing environment.
  • Expertise in operating CNC machining centers (mills, lathes, grinders) with strong G-code programming and setup skills.
  • Proficiency with conventional machining equipment and various hand tools.
  • Thorough understanding of blueprint reading, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and metrology.
  • Advanced knowledge of various metals, alloys, and plastics, and their machining properties.
  • Ability to work with extremely tight tolerances and intricate geometries.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) and Wire EDM operations.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam).
  • Experience in lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Formal apprenticeship completion in Tool & Die Making.
