Job Description
The Train Conductor is a highly critical role, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trains within the Mile End, Montreal region and beyond. Key Responsibilities
- Operate trains safely and efficiently in compliance with all federal, provincial, and company rules and regulations.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of train cars, locomotives, and track conditions.
- Manage train movements, including coupling and uncoupling cars, switching, and building/breaking up trains.
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers, engineers, and other crew members using radios and hand signals.
- Interpret and adhere to signal indications, track warrants, and other operational directives.
- Complete all necessary reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Monitor train speed, air brake systems, and other operational indicators.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies or unexpected situations on the tracks.
- Ensure the security of cargo and passengers as per company guidelines.
- Participate actively in ongoing safety training and continuous professional development.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to interpret and follow complex rules, regulations, and operating procedures.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with crew, dispatch, and completing reports.
- Exceptional observational skills and attention to detail, particularly regarding safety and equipment.
- Ability to make sound decisions quickly and effectively under pressure.
- Mechanical aptitude and a basic understanding of train operations and systems.
- Physical fitness required for walking considerable distances, climbing, lifting, and working in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in railway operations or a similar heavy equipment/transportation role.
- Completion of a recognized railway conductor training program.
- Knowledge of local geography and railway routes in the Quebec region.
- Ability to speak French is a significant asset due to the location.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
